   In the practice, there are many methods that can be used in English vocabulary teaching, such as making use of word formation, making use of visual teaching aids, combining words with sentence grammars and so on. I think using contest is also an effective way to teach vocabulary.
   Contest in the class is a competition in which students try to win. How to use it properly in the teaching process is worthy of thinking. As far as I am concerned, I will design four steps and prepare some gifts for the winners in advance. Firstly, the teacher will divide the students into several groups. Secondly, the teacher will give each group the same word cards. Thirdly, if the teacher say the Chinese meaning of a word, the group which finds out the right card and reads it correctly will get one score. The contest will come to an end until all the words in the teacher's list are said. Finally, the group which gets the highest score will be the winner and the teacher will give them gifts.
   To sum up, contest in vocabulary teaching has its advantages and disadvantages. On the one hand, competition arouses students' learning motivation and helps students improve their vocabulary level. On the other hand, if some students fail in the contest, they may lose confidence and feel upset. So teachers should pay attention to the feelings of students and give them correct guidance.
