【正确答案】
Yu Yuan Garden
Yu Yuan Garden, located in the original old town of Shanghai, is a famous classical garden with a history of more than 400 years. Ingenious in design, the garden is typical of the southern architectural style of the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) Dynasties. It has some 40 different scenes, connected by winding corridors and paths. The exquisite layout of the pavilions, terraces, towers, rockeries and ponds gives one the unique impression of seeing a wide view in a small confined area. Thus an unlimited image is created in a limited space, presenting a magnificent scenery in a perfect manner,
The original owner of Yu Yuan Garden was Pan Yunduan, once a high-ranking official during the Ming Dynasty. Construction of the garden started in 1559, but it went on and off for lack of sufficient funds. Twenty years had elapsed when the garden was finally completed. Later on, with the decline of the Pans, Yu Yuan Garden was sold at a low price, which passed through many hands and was eventually merged into the City God Temple to become its "West Garden". In 1853, the insurrectionary army of the Shanghai Small Sword Society who rose against the rule of the Qing government set up its northern town headquarters in the Dian Chun Hall of the garden. Now on display in the hall are some remnants of the weaponry used, the proclamations published and the coins made by the Small Sword Society.
Since the 16th century Yu Yuan Garden had undergone many changes and suffered repeated devastation. By the end of the 1940's, it was reduced to a desolate waste. Under the care of the People's Government, after a five-year-long renovation which began in 1956, Yu Yuan Garden regained its splendor of the former days. In 1961, it was officially open to public. Designated by the State Council in 1982 as a cultural relic placed under special protection by the government, Yu Yuan Garden is one of the best gardens in South China. Today, at least 10,000 visitors tour the garden every day. No wonder people say: "Those who have visited Shanghai but missed Yu Yuan Garden cannot claim that they have been to the city."
In front of Yu Yuan Garden, there is a beautiful lotus pond. Across the pond is a zigzag bridge with a pavilion in the middle. The Mid-lake Pavilion was rebuilt in 1784 and was later converted into a teahouse. This teahouse is a favorite place for elderly people, who enjoy chatting with each other over a cup of tea.
The zigzag bridge on which the teahouse sits is provided for tourists to enjoy the scenes on both sides, as each turn of the bridge affords a different view. Each year, at the Lantern Festival which falls on the 15th of the first lunar month, mass celebrations are held within this area, which is a scene of bustle and excitement.
