Should We Restore Ruins?

With the development of economy and improvement of people’s life, an ever-increasing number of people begin to bring history and culture into people’s sight. It was reported that in the past few years, in the Garden of Gardens, a renovation project has been under way and when the project is finished, 10 percent of the original 300-year-old garden will have been rebuilt. The restoration of Garden of Gardens is not unusual, it is typical of hundreds of government officials and enterprise runners that are attempting to draw attention and publicize their cities.

Opinions vary as to whether we should restore such ruins. Some hold the view that restoration is meant not to disrespect the history, but a way to keep a better preserved history. So far as Garden of Gardens is concerned, the ruins have been in danger of further destruction. Only restoration can help preserve what is left of the garden, or several hundred years later, they will completely disappear. Others firmly believe that restoration will doubtlessly do serious damage to the historical value. In their mind, ruins are the permanent reminder of China’s contemporary history. Since the ruins of Garden of Gardens are the ideal place for the patriotic education of the young, the ruins should be left the way they are.

So far as I’m concerned, we should restore the ruins, but not from the perspective of commercialism and business interests. If the ruins completely disappear, we will lose some important evidence to keep history. Additionally, a full-scale restoration is really disrespect for the history and a destruction of the ruins, so a partial restoration or renovation should be carried out.
