Extracurricular classes or private supplementary tutoring is growing around the world, particularly in China. Normally, in major Chinese cities, children have two or three extra lessons outside school. Parents in China pay much for their children to be tutored as they may feel inadequate if they do not help their child succeed in every way. However, it does pile economic pressure on parents and increase study burden of pupils.
Are extracurricular classes necessary for students in China? Please develop your point of view into a 400-500 words article.
Nowadays, it is very common that the children have to take one or more extracurricular classes after school or on summer and winter holiday. Some parents even hire private tutor to teach children at home. This kind of situation has been under heated discussions. Although it is quite often to hear parents complain that the price of tutoring or extracurricular classes has been rising to such a high level that they are almost unable to afford it, giving up choosing the best class or the best teacher for their children is never their choice. Before discussing whether extracurricular classes are necessary, I think the causes of this phenomenon should be analyzed first.
In terms of reasons, I think there are three main points. First of all, due to that these days the burden of parents’ work is very heavy, there is little time for them to tutor the children’s homework, let alone teach the children extra knowledge. Secondly, as the syllabus and teaching content are continuously optimized and perfected, some knowledge points of the subjects have never been touched by parents, so it is difficult for them to teach their children. Moreover, the comparison psychology of parents is also one of the factors. This kind of comparison sometimes causes parents to blindly force their children to take part in certain courses, regardless of whether they are interested in the course. Given all these facts, we can to some extent understand the phenomenon.
Are extracurricular classes necessary for students? The answer is positive. Several benefits make the extracurricular classes justifiable. On one hand, students can resolve problems that are not addressed at school and consolidate what they have understood, which is the most fundamental purpose of the extracurricular classes. On the other hand, students can learn the knowledge that the school would not teach in this new class, and they can meet more like- minded friends. If it is an interest class, students can further develop their hobbies and interests, and gain proficiency in a particular field, promoting their all-round development. What’s more, given the fact that there are so many students who are in primary school or even kindergarten have to wear glasses, let students actively participate in extracurricular courses can reduce their time spent on mobile phones, computers and other electronic products, which not only protects their eyesight, but also increases the exchanges with their teachers and classmates.
To sum up, it is understandable and necessary to let children take part in extracurricular classes. What parents should bear in mind is that the classes should not be compulsory and should be catered to the child’s talent.
