Since the beginning of the reform and opening-up in 1978, China has been undergoing number of social and economic changes. People now enjoy a higher standard of living. However, more and more people choose to divorce. According to a report released by the Ministry of Civil Affairs in 2015, the divorce rate in China has increased to 3. 9 percent, with 3. 63 million couples bringing their marriage to an end, compared to 1. 05 percent in 2003, and 0. 4 percent in 1985. Why some happy marriages fail? There can be many factors that contribute to divorce, but the following two reasons may better explain the soaring divorce rate.

On the one hand, the social progress and growing gender equality in China has encouraged women to extricate themselves from an unhappy marriage and protect themselves in cases of domestic violence or extramarital affairs. Nowadays women in big cities and urban regions have more opportunities for higher education leading to well-paid jobs, which makes them financially independent. They don’ t need to put up with a dead marriage for the sake of their husbands’ financial support. As for women in the rural area, they may be forced to stay in a broken marriage, but they become more and more aware that divorce is not a shame and it could be a new beginning of a happy life.

On the other hand, the mass adoption of social media across China has made it easier to have an affair and trigger divorce. With the popularization of smart phone and the development of the social media, more and more people use apps such as Wechat and MOMO. A lot of couples are addicted to these apps and chat with strangers secretly, instead of their own spouses. Gradually, they turn away from each other.

As far as I am concerned, although the divorce rate is so high, I still desire for a happy marriage. Happy marriages are all like while every unhappy marriage is unhappy in its own way. If you try to find eternal happiness through marriage, then you are doomed to be unhappy, even get divorced. Love is necessary to a successful union, but a perfect one is based on mutual trust and tolerance. It is not an easy task to manage a happy marriage since there are so many trifles in our life, but if you can show your respect for your spouse and have more communication with each other, you will be much happier.
