Academic Cheating on Campus

Nowadays, educational cause is prospering in China. However, more and more university students and teachers are involved in academic cheating, a phenomenon that a university student or teacher copies some or all contents from others’ academic papers for their convenience. Academic cheating has become one of the most serious problems in the educational field. Therefore, it is imperative for us to make sense of the causes of academic cheating and come up with effective solutions to curb the trend.

The over-pursuit of fame and gain, and the unreasonable judgment system for university teachers can largely account for their conduct of academic cheating. University teachers usually don’ t take teaching as their main job responsibility. They spend a large amount of time doing researches, hoping their academic accomplishments will be enough to meet the standard in the judgment system. If they publish enough academic papers and finish enough projects, they will be promoted to the title of professor or associate professor. Then, their salary is bound to rise. That’ s understandable. But some dishonest teachers are so eager for the promotion and higher salary that they commit the mistake of copying contents from other researchers’ works. The conduct of academic cheating can never be justified because it is a clear manifestation of dishonesty which is despised in our society. Apart from teachers, some students have also done the disgraceful thing. It takes a few months’ time to finish a thesis. Some students are too lazy to write a thesis on their own. So they find thesis of similar topic and directly copy the content. Their supervisors who give them instructions for their thesis are also responsible for the students’ undisciplined behavior.

In my view, in order to prevent the occurrence of the phenomenon, the following measures should be taken. First of all, the judgment system for university teachers needs to be reformed. The number of published papers, conducted projects should not be the main measurement of their academic competence. The incorporation of teachers’ teaching and their students’ exam results into the judgment system is a helpful way. Secondly, the authorities ought to make relevant regulations and laws so that dishonest students and university teachers will be punished to a certain extent. With the deterrence of regulations and law, less students and teachers will take the risk of copying others’ academic fruits. Lastly, the prevention of academic cheating requires the self- discipline of university teachers and students. They must realize the dishonor that academic cheating may bring to them and have second thoughts.
