The Father and His Sons
A Father had a family of Sons who were often quarreling among themselves. When he failed to settle their quarrels by his exhortations, he determined to give them a practical illustration of the evils of disunion.
One day, he told them to bring him a bundle of chopsticks.
When they had done so, he placed the bundle into the hands of each of them in turn, and ordered them to break it into pieces. They tried with all their strength, and were not able to do so.
He next opened the bundle, took the chopsticks one by one, and again put them into their hands. This time, they broke them easily. He then said, “My Sons, if you are of one mind, and unite to help each other, you will be as this bundle of chopsticks, uninjured by all the attempts of your enemies; but if you are divided among yourselves, you will be broken as easily as these chopsticks.”

Unity is Power
Many drops of water can make up a sea. Many trees can turn into a forest Many people can be combined together to make a society. Everything proves the idea that unity is strength, especially in this competitive society, when teamwork spirit and cooperation is placed top priority. Therefore, we shouldn't ignore the importance of unity; otherwise, we will pay a heavy price.
Life is full of ups and downs and there are always many difficulties lying on the road that leads to success. When we come across some troubles, what should we do to solve the problems? It is certain that unity can help us a lot. For example, on 12th May, 2008, a terrible earthquake happened in Sichuan Province. Many people were injured and lots of people died but those who were still alive didn't lose confidence, because not only the whole nation were united and went there to help them out but also some individuals and organizations abroad gave their hands to the area. With all the help, Sichuan has been rebuilt well now. Owing to the cooperation of Chinese people, Sichuan gets through this disaster successfully. So, unity is strength whenever we are faced with difficulties or in a dilemma.
Besides the above advantages, unity can provide us with an opportunity to cooperate with others. In the real life, with the development of economy, the competitions become more and more common as if everyone is your enemy instead of your partner. But it is impossible for anyone to earn success on his own. We need to cooperate with other people to achieve certain goals and unity is a good way to maintain teamwork spirit. Social development can't be separated from the social division of labor， as the saying goes “many hands make light work”. Through cooperation within a team， members of the society complement each other's weakness with their strengths. Then the efficiency of social construction, production, and other serial activities could get great improvement. So, it can be seen that the society is like a big machine composed of many parts, while cooperation is the grease which ensures its good running. Once parts of the machine drop, it stops working immediately. All these tell us that union is strength. Only by doing the teamwork and cooperation well, can the potential creativeness be fully reached and the overall goal of the development be attained smoothly.
Thus, we should follow the example to show unity and mutual aid. Difficulty itself is not terrible if we unite with all that can be united in the struggle. Please remember that solidarity means strength, solidarity means victory.
