M: Today I'd like to get back to something easier: Emotion Display Rules. As we said during the last class, these are rules that govern how we show emotion, depending on our culture.
Anyhow, I'd like to open with an example of my daughter Sally who is only 4 years old. She's a little spoiled. So before the birthday party last year, both I and my wife told her that if she got a present she didn't like, she shouldn't say so.
Sure enough, her grandmother gave her a dress that was cute but really old-fashioned. I could almost FEEL how much Sally disliked it. Luckily, her mom saved the day. She told Sally the clothes were just lovely. Sally's a smart kid. She picked up the clothes and smiled and gave her grandma a big hug. Of course, she still dislikes wearing the dress, but during the time Grandma visited, she was smiling.
