On Online Movement and Offline Activity
With access to the internet and the fast growing World Wide Web, the number of Chinese internet users increased rapidly. According to “the 29th Statistical Survey Report on the Internet Development in China”, the scale of Chinese internet users is 5.13 hundred million until the end of December 2011. Accordingly, the online movements played more and more important role in society and life.
Online communities build off social movements, enabling the connection of persons worldwide to develop a base and gain awareness to the cause. Therefore, the online movements appear with incomparable advantages. Without the limitations of time and space, online movements can be open to the whole world. Through the use of social networking sites and content-sharing sites, the opportunity for wide-scale, online social participation has increased. In the political sphere, active online groups increase political participation by providing a framework for discussion, leading petitions, and collecting donations in order to further a political agenda. Online movements are able to raise awareness for many social and international issues such as public health, political unrest, disaster relief, and climate change. The impact of online movements is substantial. However, there are some inevitable disadvantages of online movements, and offline activities can make up for them. Because of more opportunities for the face-to-face exchanges and communications, offline activities can be more direct and more considerate than online movements. As a result, we need to connect online movements with offline activities and enable them to make a great contribution to our society.
In conclusion, it is important for us to take full advantage of the internet to play the role of online movement on the one hand; we should not ignore the offline activities which are indispensable for our life on the other hand. The online movements and the offline activities can be applied together to serve life better.
