Postgraduates gain knowledge about the world from two sources: research and practice. These two resources are both important, but which of them is more important?

Admittedly, we can’ t learn everything from research. There is an old saying goes like “Experience is the best teacher” , which I agree with. The most important, and sometimes the hardest, lessons we learn in life come from our participation in different situations. For postgraduate students who are about to enter job market, the capacity for scientific research is not the only thing that matters. They learn how to get along with others or how to have self-respect from practice, not from research. They cannot learn emotional feelings, such as love and care, through books; instead, they come from our real life experience.

However, research is essential to postgraduates as well. Firstly, theoretical research pave ways for more advanced scientific as well as social studies. Take mathematics for example. Many people are under the impression that advanced mathematical researches in postgraduate programs are too theoretical to have any practical value. However, the truth is that, we are in an age in which all areas of science are permeated more and more by methods and approaches derived from mathematics researches. Even marketing, once believed to be just a highly practical art of persuading people to buy, is now developing to be a scientific subject based on statistical studies of market data. Secondly, practical skills and experiences are based on researches. Some professions require that people have solid understanding in theoretical research before going into practice in those professions. For example, to be a qualified pharmacist, a postgraduate student will have to do scientific research at a medical school for a few years, then in the final year of study, he or she will be given chance to practice in a hospital or pharmacy company to gain practical experience. Only with a combined knowledge both in research and in practice, can a postgraduate truly become a successful pharmacist. The same goes with a group of other professions such as lawyers, psychiatrists, etc.

Needless to say, both learning sources, research and practice, are very important to us. But from my point of view, research is more important. We have specialized schools such as polytechnic schools and vocational schools, for example schools specialized in teaching cooking skills, to provide practical trainings. Therefore postgraduate students should focus more on research.
