Benefits and Challenges of Globalization on Chinese Culture

As we all know, the last decades has witnessed the accelerated advancement of economy, which brings the economic globalization, a tendency that can never be held back. Under the condition of economic globalization, cultural exchanges between countries and countries, regions and areas are becoming more and more frequent, accompanied by opportunities and benefits it provides, we are also stood in front of the huge challenges to the culture. Just like a coin, which has two sides, on the one hand, the globalization is not only accelerating economic growth speed, spreading new technology and effective ways to improve the level of life rich and poor countries, but, it is also a controversial process that may contribute to a national sovereignty, erosion infringement to local and traditional culture, and the threat of economic and social stability.

There is no denying that progress in communication and transport technology during the 20th century has enabled us to overcome geographical boundaries and revolutionize our way of living. The world is now linked to such an extent that a local happening cannot take place without impacting on the international community and vice versa. It is not surprising to find that the great differences between countries, which used to be existing in almost every sphere of people’s life, have become less obvious. For example, we Chinese people are sharing the same Hollywood movie as the Americans, enjoying the same fashionable clothes as the young girls in Paris and even chasing after the same brands as the people all over the world. Meanwhile, various Chinese elements become disclosed to the world. Foreigners show great interest in Chinese food, language and technology like mobile payment, take-out, bicycle- sharing and so on.

However, this kind of chance for cultural communication may not seem so surprising after considering some disheartening facts indicating that the potential demerits may well outweigh the relatively weak merits. That is, globalization has brought great challenges to Chinese culture. In the process of globalization and with the expansion of cultural communication, western culture sweeps China. It’s really a pity to see the decline of traditional festivals. What’s worse, the process of cultural globalization will inevitably lead to conflicts of various ethnic cultures round the world. To be exact, globalization, in its powerful extension of market principles, by highlighting the culture of economically powerful nations, has created new forms of inequality.

For those reasons above, globalization is a fierce and complicated struggle in both cultural and ideological fields. We should take the initiative in international economic integration but also have to take the initiative in fighting to keep our distinct culture resisting pro-foreign, excessive westernization cross-bred phenomena, and overcoming the psychology of preferring money over ethical values.
