Charging More during Peak Seasons

Nowadays, with people's living standards steadily improved, an increasing amount of people opt to spend their holidays in various resorts. Admittedly, apart from massive economic benefits brought to the local government, the tourist exploitation also brings a heavy burden to the sites of historical interest. Recently, it's reported that many sites of historical interest in China have begun or are considering charging tourists higher entry fees during peak travel seasons. Some express objection to this idea while others show their approval for it. From my perspective, the decision to charge more during peak seasons proves to be both sensible and practical.

To start with, approval of this proposal is based on that charging tourists higher entry fees is conducive to the protection of historical sites. As is known to us, too many tourists would inevitably produce a lot of rubbish and further pose a threat to the environment. There are even people who litter waste paper, fruit peels or spit onto the ground. What's more, certain uncivilized behaviors could directly do harm to the conservation of properties. A good case in point would be some tourists who have the habit of inscribing their names on trees or rocks as a mark of their arrival. And in places where flash light is forbidden on account of the protection of some vulnerable objects, many tourists blatantly violate related regulations in order to take photos. As a result, to protect the environment as well as properties there, to increase entry fee is of necessity.

Secondly, charging higher entry fees could ensure the safety of visitors to some extent. Accidents are more likely to happen in overcrowded places. For many years, numerous people got injured or even lost their life because of stampedes. According to a survey conducted by the China's Bureau of Tourism, 69% of all the accidents are caused by overcrowded people. Consequently, raising the entry fees during peak seasons can assure a better environment for tourists.

Last but most importantly, this practice could not only protect the sites of historical interest but also ensure sustainable development of the tourist industry there. As we all know, the maintenance and protection of the historical sites requires adequate funds and well-organized system. Thanks to the increased entry fees, local governments will be able to adopt more effective measures to better preserve the historical sites and perform the daily maintenance ritual. With more money allocated to the conservation and management of historical sites, the holding capacity could be improved accordingly.

To sum up, raising entry fees during peak seasons does provide multiple benefits. There is no denying that we should protect the rights of the economically underprivileged and give them opportunities to access these places. A practical solution to the problem is that they are allowed to enter historical sites during off-peak seasons free of charge. In short, I strongly advocate the practice of charging more during peak seasons.
