Punishment is Not a Good Way of Discipline

As is vividly depicted in the picture that a child is smacked by his father, bitterly taught "dare you do that again." It is obvious that his parent aims to develop the ability of his child to tell right from wrong through punishing him. However, I am convinced that punishment has played a limited role in this.
To help a child tell right from wrong, teachers and parents should firstly set a good model in their own behaviours. After that, if punishment is needed, it should not be of a physical nature, as that merely sends the message that it is acceptable for larger people to hit smaller ones, resulting in the child starting to learn to bully others.
By contrast, teachers and parents should use a variety of gentle methods to discipline children, such as detention and withdrawal of privileges. Through these methods, children will pick up the rubbish they have dropped, clean up the graffiti they have drawn or apologise to the person they have hurt. In these ways can children develop their responsibilities, which leads to much better future behaviour than does punishment.
