A steadily expanding appetite for coal, fuelled by China"s rapid industrial growth, has led to a dramatic rise in environmental "damage from acid rain, the China Daily, an official Chinese newspaper, reported on December 7, 1999. The newspaper summarised the findings of a recent study conducted by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Forestry (CAF).
The study"s authors said that after Europe and North America, China is the world"s third largest region to be affected by acid rain, a type of air pollution formed when oxides of sulfur and nitrogen combine with atmospheric moisture. Nearly 50 percent of China"s land area is now affected, a figure the researchers expect will rise.
