Motivating employees is vital if employers are to achieve maximum performance and productivity. There are a wide variety of methods available for motivating staff, at prices to suit all budgets. These range from recognizing employees' achievements by simply saying "thank you" to more complex schemes which combine set targets with fixed rewards.
Ensuring staff remain motivated can help to boost productivity, company loyalty and levels of engagement. While the overall organization's culture and quality of management are key drivers of motivation, employers can use a team building event or individual incentive, staff award and social, days out, prizes and vouchers to reward and recognize employees who achieve in the workplace. Methods of reward to motivate can include, paper reward vouchers: online accounts or reward cards and internal award ceremonies. Corporate recognition awards and reward programs can be both inexpensive and hugely valuable for the employer and to assess the success of reward and recognition schemes, employee motivation can be recorded using techniques such a motivation questionnaire.
Flexible working arrangements
Offering flexible working arrangements for staff can also be hugely motivating by enabling them to achieve a better work-life balance. This can be as simple as allowing employees to start and finish an hour earlier or later, or include options such as part-time work, job shares, compressed hours, career breaks and sabbaticals.
Online accounts or reward cards
These work in much the same way as vouchers, but employers can top up the value of employees' rewards online. Technological developments have enabled several providers to launch credit-card style reward systems, which can be spent at only those outlets that accept cards from the sponsoring payment provider such as Visa or Maestro. Electronic motivation vouchers are an import from America and while paper vouchers remain popular for employee reward and recognition, girl cards are increasingly prevalent.
Paper reward vouchers
Paper reward vouchers were introduced to the UK in the 1970's. They have long been key to employee motivation strategies and are available for a huge range of products from groceries; household goods and retail items to activity and experience days. Employers can select which denomination they wish to award and enable staff to choose their own reward. The voucher options include single-store or multi-retailer vouchers.
Internal award ceremonies
These can be used to highlight employees' achievements. Annual staff functions such as award ceremonies and parties can be offered tax-free up to a limit of £150 per employee per year. A recognition award via an internal award ceremony can be the culmination of an employee incentive scheme intended to improve employee motivation. The ceremony can be used to recognize strong individual or group performance and provide employee recognition without being costly for the employer.
