A Frightful Experience Mr. Peter Johnson, aged twenty-three, battled for half an hour to escape from his trapped car yesterday when it landed upside down in three feet of water. Mr. Johnson took the only escape route—through the boot (后备箱). Mr. Johnson' s car had finished up in a ditch (沟渠) at Romney, Kent, after skidding on ice and hitting a bank. " Fortunately, the water began to come in only slowly, " Mr. Johnson said. "I couldn' t force the doors because they were jammed against the walls of the ditch and dared not open the windows because I knew water would come flooding in. " Mr. Johnson, a sweet salesman of Sitting Home, Kent, first tried to attract the attention of other motorists by sounding the horn and hammering on the roof and boot. Then he began his struggle to escape. Later he said, "It was really a half penny that saved my life. It was the only coin I had in my pocket and I used it to unscrew the back seat to get into the boot. I hammered desperately with a hammer trying to make someone hear, but no help came. " It took ten minutes to unscrew the seat, and a further five minutes to clear the samples from the boot. Then Mr. Johnson found a wrench (扳手) and began to work on the boot lock. Fifteen minutes passed by. "It was the only chance I had. Finally it gave, but as soon as I moved the boot lid, the water and mud poured in. I forced the lid down into the mud and scrambled clear as the car filled up. " His hands and arms cut and bruised(擦伤) , Mr. Johnson got to Beckett Farm nearby, where he was looked after by the farmer's wife, Mrs. Lucy Bates. Huddled in a blanket, he said, "That thirty minutes seemed like hours. " Only the tips of the car wheels were visible, police said last night. The vehicle had sunk into two feet of mud at the bottom of the ditch.
单选题1.Mr. Peter Johnson succeeded in escaping through his car' s boot.
A
根据文章第一段最后一句话“Mr.Johnson took the only escape route—through the boot”可知他最终从唯一的出口,也就是车子的后备箱逃了出来,所以题干表述是正确的。
单选题2.Mr. Johnson' s car fell down into the ditch because of his carelessness.
4.He dared not open the windows because the doors were jammed against the walls of the ditch.
根据文章第二段的内容我们了解到,在车子掉到水渠里以后,车门是没法打开的(“I couldn’t force the doors”),这是因为“they were jammed against the walls of the ditch”;而作者不敢打开窗户,是因为“water would come flooding in”,也就是说一旦打开窗户水会立马灌进来。
5.Mr. Peter Johnson first sought help from other drivers by sounding his horn and then began self-rescue.
A
文中第三段提到“first tried to attract the attention of other motorists by sounding the horn and hammering on the roof and boot”,在这之后,他开始努力逃生(“Then he began his struggle to escape”)。
6.There were some coins in his pockets and only the half penny was suitable in size to unscrew the back seat.
文中第四段提到“It was the only coin I had in my pocket and I used it to unscrew the back seat”,意思是“我只有一枚半分硬币”,所以题干表述是错误的。
单选题7.Mr. Peter Johnson spent ten minutes unscrewing the seat in order to get into the boot.
A
第五段第一句话提到“It took ten minutes to unscrew the seat”,所以题干表述是正确的。
单选题8.In order to unlock the boot, he used a hammer and broke the lock.
文中第五段提到“found a wrench and began to work on the boot lock”,意思是“他找到了一个扳手,用扳手打开了后备箱”,而不是用hammer,所以题干表述是错误的。
单选题9.Beckett Farm is a beautiful farm and keeps many horses and cows.
单选题10.This experience is quite dreadful and dangerous for him and his car will lie forever in the mud at the bottom of the ditch.
这是一个推断题,文章的题目是“A Frightful Experience”,文中也多次提到了这次经历是多么的危险,而且在最后一段里警察说“The vehicle had sunk into two feet of mud at the bottom of the ditch”但并没有说他的车将永远躺在水底的泥里,因此无法判断题干是否正确。
