G8 Summit Leaders of the Group of Eight Major Industrialized Nations (G8) will meet in Scotland in July this year. Representatives from China, India, Mexico, South Africa and Brazil have also been invited. Here"s what the G8 leaders want from the meeting. British Prime Minister Tony Blair wants the G8 to cancel debt to the world"s poorest countries. He wants them to double aid to Africa to 50 billion pounds by 2010. He has also proposed reducing subsidies to Western farmers and removing restrictions on African exports. This has not got the approval of all members because it will hurt their agricultural interests. On climate change, Blair wants concerted (共同的) action by reducing carbon emissions (排放). US President George W. Bush agrees to give help to Africa. But he says he doesn"t like the idea of increasing aid to countries as it will increase corruption. Bush said he would not sign an agreement to cut greenhouse gas emissions at the summit, according to media. The US is the only G8 member not to have signed the Kyoto Protocol (《京都议定书》). Although the US is the world"s biggest polluter, Bush so far refuses to believe there is sufficient scientific data to establish beyond a doubt that there is a problem. French President Jacques Chirac supports Blair on Africa and climate change. He is determined to get the US to sign the climate change deal. German Chancellor Gerhard Schroder remains doubtful of Blair"s Africa proposals. Schroder"s officials have dismissed the notion that money will solve Africa"s problems as "old thinking. " Berlin says that African states should only receive extra money if they can prove they"ve solved the corruption problem. Russian President Vladimir Putin was doubtful about the value of more aid to Africa. But he has seen a way to make this work to his advantage. Putin intends to use the aid to Africa as a springboard (跳板) next year to propose aid to the former Soviet republics of Georgia, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Moldova. Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi"s priorities are a seat on the UN Security Council, for which he will be lobbying (游说) at the summit. And he"s concerned about the Democratic People"s Republic of Korea"s nuclear weapons programme.

How does it happen that children learn their mother tongue so well? When we compare them with adults learning a foreign language, we often find this interesting fact. A little child without knowledge or experience often succeeds in a complete mastery of the language. A grown-up person with fully developed mental powers, in most cases, may end up with a faulty and inexact command. What accounts for this difference? Despite other explanations, the real answer in my opinion lies partly in the child himself, partly in the behavior of the people around him. In the first place, the time of learning the mother tongue is the most favorable of all, namely, the first years of life. A child hears it spoken from morning till night and, what is more important, always in its genuine form, with the right pronunciation, right intonation, and right use of words and right structure. He drinks in all the words and expressions, which come to him in a flash, everbubbling spring. There is no resistance: there is perfect assimilation. Then the child has, as it were, private lessons all the year round, while an adult language-student has each week a limited number of hours, which he generally shares with others. The child has another advantage: he hears the language in all possible situations, always accompanied by the right kind of gestures and facial expressions. Here there is nothing unnatural, such as is often found in language lessons in schools, when one talks about ice and snow in June or scorching heat in January. And what a child hears is generally what immediately interests him. Again and again, when his attempts at speech are successful, his desires are understood and fulfilled. Finally, though a child"s "teachers" may not have been trained in language teaching, their relations with him are always close and personal. They take great pains to make their lessons easy.

Would you quit your job if you didn"t need the money? In a 1990 poll by the Gallop Organization, many people said quitting work was an important reason to be rich. Yet researchers find that work is one of life"s chief satisfactions for people. Consider Berry Fowler. In 1979, Fowler started a tutoring company that became so successful he was able to sell out and retire in 1987—a multimillionaire at 40. He bought a 50-foot cabin cruiser and a house in Hawaii, and busied himself vacationing. But after five years of perpetual vacation, Flower began to miss the challenges of work. So in 1992, he bought a fitness chain for children and now spends 75 hours a week immersed in balance sheets and staff meetings. "My best days on the golf course weren"t half as much fun as a good day at the office," he says. A job, studies show, is more than a paycheck. Doing something well can increase confidence and self-worth. When sociologist H. Ray Kaplan surveyed 139 lottery millionaires, he discovered 60 percent continued working at least a year after they"d won. If jobs are so important, wouldn"t salary size be a gauge of job satisfaction? Americans think so. A survey, conducted last year by Roper Starch Worldwide, Inc., found that almost 70 percent of the respondents said they would be happier if their families had twice as much household income. Yet studies show that job satisfaction comes less from how much people earn than from the challenge of their jobs and the control they are able to exert. Work that doesn"t engage a person will never seem rewarding, no matter how lucrative it becomes.

Winners and Losers
Why are the biggest winners in the past decade of trade globalization mostly in South and East Asia, whereas the biggest losers are mostly in the former Soviet bloc (集团) and sub-Saharan Africa? History is a partial guide: East Asia has a long trading tradition, lately reinvigorated (给以新的活力) by the Chinese adoption of market economics. The Soviet Union, on the other hand, Was sheltered from free-market forces for more than 70 years. In Africa, some countries are disadvantaged because of inadequate infrastructure (基础结构); many countries have little to trade but commodities, the prices of which have fallen in recent years. In some regions, certain countries have suffered by adopting misguided policies, often under pressure from International Monetary Fund. First among these is Russia, which in the early 1990s tried to embrace capitalism before first building the institutions that make capitalism work, such as an independent bank system, a system of business law, and all adequate methods for collecting taxes. Encouraged by the IMF, the World Bank and the US Department of the Treasury, President Boris Yeltsin"s regime privatized the state owned industrial sector, creating a class of oligarchs (寡头政治集团成员), who, knowing how unstable conditions were at home, sent their money abroad instead of investing it at home. In contrast, China, the biggest winner from globalization, did not follow the IMF formula. Of the former states of the Soviet bloc, only a few, notably Poland and Hungary, managed to grow, which they did by ignoring IMF advice and adopting expansionary plans, including spending more than they collected in taxes. Botswana and Uganda are also Success stories, despite their disadvantages, their countries achieved vigorous growth by creating stable civil societies, liberalizing trade and implementing reforms that ran counter to IMF prescriptions.

"Own" Your Children"s Education
"Helping them isn"t about showing your kids how to do the work. It"s about being genuinely interested and having regular conversations about what they"re learning," says J. Gary Knowles, a professor at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, part of the University of Toronto. Rozon has a slew of suggestions for how to get more involved. "Get to know the teacher. Discuss ways to tailor the assignments to your child"s learning style. Spend time in the classroom. Ask for outlines of unit studies so you can find supplementary materials at the library or through videos. Read your child"s textbooks: if you work a few pages ahead, you"ll be able to help them with problems they encounter. " "Reading is another must," says Rozon. "Even after your children can read them- selves, hearing somebody else read aloud is important. We nearly always have a book on the go; we read for at least a half hour before bedtime. " "The more engaged a parent is, the more the child benefits," adds Bruce Arai. "The evidence is clear: parental involvement is one of the most important factors in school success." Arai cites the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth sponsored by Human Resources Development Canada (HRDC), which is measuring all aspects of child development. "The hours children spend in class are but one element of their education," states HRDC, which says parental support, along with teacher support and a positive attitude towards school, all contribute to academic success. "I see every moment of every day as a learning experience," says Goforth. "The most satisfying part of it is seeing the love of learning continued. I"m not squelching my children"s desire to learn by insisting they learn. They learn because they want to. " Adds Jeanne Lambert, mother of Carey Graham. "Make the time, take the time, guide, lead, and encourage. If nothing else, your children learn you care, and that"s the most important lesson you can give them. "

After Christmas comes the anti-Christmas. If the festive season is all about filling up on the things you like that are bad for you, then the new year is the "detox season" — when people across the western world adopt special diets to lose weight and get rid of the vague feeling that they have spent the last few weeks poisoning themselves. But are detox diets really necessary? After all, the body itself gets rid of unwanted substances. That"s what the liver and kidney are for. "The detox fad—or fads, as there are many methods—is an example of the capacity of people to believe in and pay for magic despite the lack of any sound evidence," says Martin Wiseman, professor of human nutrition at the University of Southampton in the UK. Most of the pills, juices, teas and oils that are sold for their detoxifying effects on the body have no scientific foundation for their claims, according to the research. People would be better off having a glass of water and going to bed early. Detox diets may be magic rather than science, but they are the kind of magic which many people want to perform. That may have something to do with the western diet in general. Scientists and dieticians argue that the benefits people feel are not due to their body getting rid of excessive toxins but are due to changing from what is likely to have been a "poor" diet. Having fewer headaches, for example, is probably the result of being fully hydrated due to drinking so much water and better skin may be due to eating more fruit and vegetables. Detox diets may also be dangerous, as they may deprive vulnerable groups—pregnant women, for instance, or growing teenagers—of the kind of nutrients they need. Yet their popularity continues to rise. This may be something to do with the way that food works within many western cultures. Generally, a country"s food develops along with its economy and society. Food becomes part of a person"s cultural identity. In some countries, this link has been broken. In the UK, for example, rapid industrialization in the 18th and 19th centuries saw millions of people move from the countryside to the towns interrupting the development of a national cuisine. The United States, a country of immigrants from many different places, have found it hard to develop a national cuisine. In both places, comparatively few people cook for themselves and food supply is dominated by big processing and agribusiness companies. Detox diets are more popular in these countries than in places like France and Italy, where strong links between food and national culture remain, and where far more people regularly cook for themselves instead of buying processed foods. Perhaps detox diets are successful because many westerners have lost trust in what they eat. On the other hand, they may help re-introduce people to the kind of food that is necessary for a healthy diet. And after learning that, they won"t poison themselves in the first place. This would mean radical changes in the way that people eat across the west. And that would be an unwelcome development for the food industry. From the business point of view, it is much better to sell people the problem and then sell them the solution.
36. Detox begins after Christmas when people think they have been overeating during the Christmas season and have taken in many substances that are bad for their health.
39. The French and the Italians cook for themselves more often than the British and the Americans, which helps them to keep the link between food and their culture.
40. On the whole the eastern people like the Chinese and the Japanese have a stronger link between their food and their culture than the western people.
Since 1939, numerous studies have been conducted to determine whether smoking is a health hazard. The trend of the evidence has been consistent and indicates that there is a serious health risk. Research teams have conducted studies that show beyond all reasonable doubt that tobacco smoking is associated with a shortened life expectancy. Cigarette smoking is believed by most research workers in this field to be an important factor in the development of cancer of the lungs and cancer of the throat and is believed to be related to cancer of some other organs of the body. Male cigarette smokers have a higher death rate from heart disease than non-smoking males. Female smokers are thought to be less affected because they do not breathe in the smoke so deeply. Apart from statistics, it might be helpful to look at what tobacco does to the human body. Smoke is a mixture of gases, vaporized chemicals, minute particles of ash and other solids. There is also nicotine, which is powerful poison, and black tar. As smoke is breathed in, all those components form deposits on the membranes of the lungs. One point of concentration is where the air tube and bronchus divides. Most lung cancer begins at this point. Filters and low-tar tobaccos are claimed to make smoking to some extent safer, but they can only slightly reduce, not eliminate the hazards.
43. It is easy to determine whether smoking is hazardous.
