Your Response:
The Importance of Water to Life
Water is essential for life. It ranks next to oxygen in importance. The body's need for water exceeds even its need for food. You can live for days, even weeks, without food, but only for two or three days without water.
About one-half to two-thirds of the body is made up of water. It is the solvent for everything we digest, and it holds nutrients in solution and carries them through the blood stream. Water is an important part of every cell structure, and it carries away the body's waste products.
Water also regulates body temperature by evaporating through the skin as perspiration. A healthy body needs a regular and generous intake of water to perform all the tasks. It is provided by the fluids we drink, whether water itself or other liquids such as coffee, tea, juices, milk, or soft drinks. Many foods also contain water: celery and lettuce are good examples.
Although water supplies neither energy nor vitamins, it does contain minerals, which are helpful for the body.
