EXAMINER: OK, thank you. That's part one. Now I'm going to give you a topic and I'd like you to talk about it for one to two minutes. Before you begin you have one minute to think about what you are going to say. You may make some notes if you wish. Do you understand?
CANDIDATE: Yes.
EXAMINER: OK. Here's a pen and paper.
CANDIDATE: Thank you.
EXAMINER: And here's your topic-describe a school rule that you dislike or disagree with.
CANDIDATE: I'm going to talk about a school rule that at the time I disliked. That's a rule I did not like when I was in school, which was the rule which required me to wear a uniform, a rule I frequently disobeyed. Basically, we didn't have a very strict rule in my school. We just had to wear some basic colours which represented the school, but you know at the time I was quite an individualist or a punk or whatever you'd like to call it, so I basically just used to wear black everyday. Pretty much black-that was the main colour. The principal really didn't like this at all but ... and actually he used to refer to me as a hairy retread, because I had long hair as well. But he couldn't really do much because I was getting really good grades. I didn't like it at the time because I felt I couldn't express myself wearing the colours of the school and I especially loathed the school jumper, which was particularly ugly. But, now, at this age and as a teacher, I can really understand the benefits of having a uniform. Firstly, it builds unity and secondly I can see how-especially in this day and age of name brands-how if you don't have school uniforms, then there'll be a lot of competition amongst the kids and of course that always means that the poorer kids suffer ... they get teased and that sort of thing. So I don't really want to suggest any alternatives to this rule. I believe that it's a good rule nowadays, though I do think that the private schools which require the kids to wear blazers and ties ... these kind of rules, this kind of school uniform rule is a little bit over the top, especially in summer.
