The Development of the Express Industry

The development of the express service could be traced back to the 1980s, when the China Post started to provide express mail service at home and abroad. This was the first express delivery service in China.
Another factor that stimulated the development of the express industry in China was the introduction of foreign express industries. Because of the fast development of China's economy, foreign express companies were attracted by the great potential of China's consumption market and began to pour into China to provide express service. Companies, like UPS and FedEx, helped to liven the express market.
Gradually, many Chinese businessmen began to participate in the competition of the express industry. As a result, the express service witnessed the sprouting of native express companies.
According to a survey, in 2013, the number of posts delivered through express service was 9.2 billion, and the income of the express industry reached 143 billion. In 2014, the number increased to be 12.8 billion; and in 2015, the number exceeded 20 billion and its income almost doubled that of 2013, amounting to 276 billion.

Problems of the Express Industry

Although the quick development of the express industry is providing people with great convenience, a lot of legal and safety issues are involved in this industrial field.
In November 2015, a van delivering posts for a certain express company was on fire on the highway. In the van there were 4,000 posts to be delivered around the country. Luckily, no people were burned or injured. However, clients and customers were heavily influenced and they had to settle claims and compensations with the express company and the shippers. If any expensive items were damaged, it would take a lot of legal procedures to decide which party should be responsible.
In July 2016, two male dispatchers died of extremely great heat when delivering posts to customers. One of them was only 28 years old. In order to deliver goods on time and avoid customers' complaints, which is very likely to happen if there is any delay, most of the express companies send out dispatchers no matter what the weather is like. For example, in the heated summer, deliverers have to run the risk of heatstroke to transfer the posts, while their companies only pay them an extra 8 RMB per day for working under such tough conditions.
Another issue present in the express industry is transportation safety. Some customers may order illegal items, like forbidden knives and explosives, and due to loose supervision, these items may still be delivered and become potential safety threats. Besides, some dispatchers use small vehicles, like motorcycles which have no licenses. They ignore transportation rules and drive very fast for more delivery, causing transportation congestion and accidents.
