E-commerce giant Alibaba has announced that it has completed its takeover of Chinese video streaming giant Youku Tudou. As a result of the merger, Youku Tudou ceased to be a publicly traded company and became a wholly owned subsidiary of Alibaba. Youku.com had traded on the New York Stock Exchange since 2010, under the ticker symbol YOKU. In 2012, Youku.com, the No. 11 website in China, and Tudou.com, No. 14, merged to become Youku Tudou.
The company revealed a “ going private” transaction last year and Youku’s shareholders approved the sale this March. Valuing Youku Tudou at US$5.40 billion, Alibaba paid $27.6 per New York Stock Exchange-listed stock. As Alibaba already owned 16.5 percent of the company, Alibaba paid some $4 billion for the outstanding shares.
Youku Tudou describes itself as a leading multi-screen entertainment and media company in China and as China's leading Internet television platform. It offers a combination of licensed professional content, user-generated content and self-produced web video content.
