Are Western Festivals Undermining Chinese Culture?
Recently, more and more young people have been fascinated to celebrate western festivals, such as Valentine's Day and Christmas Day. The celebration of those festivals seems to become indispensable for their entertainment. However, many of them seem to be not interested in traditional Chinese festivals like Dragon Boat Festival and Festival of Lanterns. Some people, therefore, worry that western festivals are undermining Chinese culture. But in my opinion, this will not happen and Chinese culture will be kept well.
There are some reasons why I believe so. On the one hand, young people have a tendency to celebrate western festivals just because they are curious about anything fresh and interesting. As we can see, foreign students also have enthusiasm for Chinese festivals and they are interested in dumplings. In fact, it is just a phenomenon of multicultural integration. It doesn't mean that one culture weighs higher than the other, but brings more novel elements to our culture. On the other hand, it is impossible for the young to forget the festivals because our country has set these traditional Chinese festivals as legal holidays so that people can have several days off from their work. They are excited at having holidays on which they can plan how to celebrate the festival without consideration of study. What's more, the most important point is that they will know more about traditional Chinese festivals through the education and media. With the development of Internet, the influences of the media on young people become obvious. Every time the festival is coming, the media will report it to remind people of the celebration of it.
In a word, young people, who are interested in western festivals out of curiosity, will not forget the traditional Chinese Festivals. That is to say, western festivals will not undermine Chinese culture, but just add some fun into our daily lives.
