In almost every form of media, including television, newspapers and magazines, a great deal of attention is paid to the personal lives of celebrities. It seems that the public cannot get enough of this kind of news.
You may wonder why there is a public obsession with information on celebrities and is it justifiable? Media may defend them by saying they serve a "public right to know", and they meets the public's needs and desires. And some people do believe that celebrities make millions for being popular and they, therefore, ought to forfeit their individual fights (including the right to privacy) and become "public property."
But I'm among the others who believe the media should respect the privacy of every individual, including public figures. They may have chosen to be in the public eye, but that does not give the public the right to know everything 'about them. Moreover, many stories about celebrities are untrue as they are only gossip reported to attract and hold the audience.
Sometimes the media's intrusion into celebrity's privacy may result in tragedies. Have you ever heard of the tragic death of former British Princess Dianna's Death in 1997? As we know it, trying to elude the media, she had her life finished in a fatal car crash, it's time for us to do something to save others from similar senseless tragedies.
As far as I am concerned, each person's life is his own -- celebrity or not; the private details are his to reveal as he sees fit. Celebrities should enjoy as much privacy as ordinary citizens. I do suggest the media have a responsibility to present a balanced view of the world instead of focusing on the private lives of public figures. In this way, they can appeal to a wider audience and encourage people to develop other interests.
