What are the different teacher roles in audiolingual method and communicative language teaching?
(1) In audiolingual method, the teacher's role is central and active. It is a teacher-dominated method. The teacher models the target language, controls the direction and pace of learning, and monitors and corrects the learners' performance. The teacher must keep the learner attractive by varying drills and tasks and choosing relevant situations to practice structures.
(2) In the CLT, the teacher has two main roles. The first role is to facilitate the communication process between all participants in the classroom, and integrate activities and texts. The second role is to act as an independent participant within the learning teaching group. These roles imply a set of secondary roles for the teacher: ①As an organizer of resources and as a resource himself, or herself; ②As a guide within the classroom for executing procedures and activities; ③As a researcher and learner, with much to contribute in terms of appropriate knowledge and abilities, actual and observed experience of the nature of learning, and organizational skills.
