The Multiple-choice Test Should Be More Scientific
For years, there"s a debate on whether or not the multiple-choice test should be canceled. Some people believe that this type of exam is a most effective and objective form of evaluation. After years of practice, the multiple-choice test has, however, shown its limitations and drawbacks.
Admittedly, the multiple-choice tests improve a student"s accuracy and proficiency in answering questions and the objectiveness of an exam. However, while a student scores high in the test, he tends to neglect certain problems that may arise. For one thing, a student is more likely to guess the answers from the four items. In this situation, even if the student gives the right answer to a question, that does not mean he has taken a good command of the knowledge. For another thing, the multiple-choice tests focus only on the right choice among four items. By comparison, the ability to express one"s thought is more or less ignored. Thus, multiple-choice tests are not a scientific method to evaluate students" knowledge command.
In conclusion, it is clear that the multiple-choice test leaves much to be desired, and therefore some measures must be taken to make it more scientific.
