No Major Bias in University
In current times, science and technology make great contribution to the society and people’s life, thus if a student majors in this field, he will be easy to get scholarship both from school and government. However, is this ought to be so? As far as I am concerned, I regard it lopsided. My reasons will be unfolded in the following parts.
First of all, we should discuss whether science is omnipotent to the development of society. Though it is helpful in many aspects to make life more convenient, it cannot solve many problems in society, such as cultural and moral problems which are also essential to society and individual, especially people’s suffering of mental persecution nowadays make literature, psychology and philosophy more important than science and technology.
Second, the amount of financial support from government should be judged by students’academic ability and contribution instead of major. If a student who learns liberal arts works hard and develops creative idea in his field, he should get financial support undoubtedly though his contribution may seem invisible sometimes. However if a science student muddles along from day to day without a scholarly pursuit, he should not get the financial support. Grants or scholarships should not be lavished upon those without real interest in or dedication to study, whereas those with real potential should be offered sufficient financial support lest they get distracted by working part time to pay for their education. Scholarship is a method to encourage students study intensively in their major without encumbering with finance shortage.
Third, we know that students learn science should carry on experiments to testify theories in their books which needs funds input. However, students who major in business and language also need experiments and investigations while doing researches. For example a language major needs to study the source, constitution or effect of a certain language, that requires manpower and materials, particularly plentiful funds to purchase advanced machines.
From what has been discussed above, we may reasonably arrive at the conclusion that all subjects are vital to human progress and there should be no bias towards different majors. Comparing the importance of each major is a hopeless attempt and the support should be granted to those who really deserve it.
