【正确答案】The Only-child Generation
In the mist of the craze of seeking overseas education a piece of disturbing news has caught public attention with a catching title: "China One Not Welcome. " It appears that some foreign university has refused to take in the Chinese students on the grounds that the only-child in Chinese families is incapable of taking care of themselves. They claim that these youngsters are not as independent in solving problems as students from other countries, therefore may cause undue problems for the education institutions.
Maybe this is an exaggeration by the media, but it has been well-known that the post-80s and post-90s generation Chinese are typically the only child of their family. When surrounded by indulging parents and grandparents alike, it is easy for a child to get used to being the center of attention, with everything being well taken care of by others. No doubt a few of those youngsters have brought abroad with them the care they were so used to at home, thus leaving an impression that they have to rely on their parents for everything.
I can understand how some parents fear for the safety of their children in an unknown foreign country and become over-protective. But being an only child myself, I feel it is unfair to have such prejudice against all post-80s generation Chinese. Certainly the majority of Chinese students abroad have proved that they are as reliable, responsible, and determined to work hard as our peers of any other nationality. In due time the new generation Chinese will be respected and appreciated by all.
