Some Problems in China’s Higher Education and Relevant Solutions

Higher education is regarded as an important cornerstone in developing China into a global economic power. As the development of China’s Higher Education, more and more students get the chance to receive more advanced education. We are pleased to see that the higher education in China has cultivated many talented people for our society. They have made great contributions to economic and social development. However, our higher education has so many problems that require us to reflect on and four challenges with special importance for the higher education should be highlighted.

Firstly, the question of distribution of educational resources between urban and rural areas needs to be addressed. Many talented students fail to have the access to college just because of the imbalanced resources distribution. In order to solve this problem, the distinction of chance for enrolment between urban and rural areas should be minished largely. The Ministry of Education and relevant authorities should reasonably redistribute educational resources, providing more funds and more enrolment opportunities to local universities.

Secondly, the issue of unemployment of university graduates seems to be both relevant and pivotal enough to be considered. Higher education should not only teach students professional knowledge, but also teach them how to adapt to society. Universities should encourage students to take a part-time job after they finish their professional knowledge study which can promote their accumulation of social experience thus laying a foundation for future career. Besides, the connection between universities and enterprises should be strengthened in order to decrease unemployment ratio.

Thirdly, it should be taken into account that quality is one of the serious issues related to higher education and the learning atmosphere in China’s university need to be improved. In China, students study hard to pass the college entrance exam. And after they pass the exam, it seems that students do not need to work so hard any more. Almost everyone can get the diploma after four years’ study. Does everyone is qualified to graduate? The answer is no. Therefore, it’s necessary to set up an effective test system that can test students’ professional skills. Students after four years’ undergraduate need to go on a higher administrative level for further study.

In addition, tuition fee is also a serious problem. High tuition fee still remains a tough block to those poor families. Both the government and the university should provide more choices like loans, part-time jobs, scholarship, student subsidies and so on to those who have difficulty in affording the tuition fee.

To sum up, I believe our higher education will become perfect through these measures, but our students themselves also have the responsibilities to improve their qualities in all kinds of aspects and do some things significant.
