Nowadays, more than 80% of residents choose to live in various apartments instead of houses in most big cities across China. In spite of this, I tend to believe that living in a house brings far more advantages.
This is partly because a house provides more space than an apartment in a high building, by which I mean the ceiling height of a normal house is usually between 3 meters to even 4.5 meters whilst that of a common apartment is somewhere less than 2.5 meters. Consequently, living in a house would be to a larger extent more comfortable.
Furthermore, the main concern is that people who live in an independent house tend to have more privacy since houses have a reasonable distance apart. On the contrary, if you live in a block of flats, there may be five or eight neighbors totally strange to you on the same floor, which sometimes means you can even overhear some quarrels from them, and vice versa, thus leading to certain unavoidable inconvenience and annoyance.
Some opponents may claim that house dwellers would have less communication with each other and thus a worse neighborhood, for they are not as physically close as those living in the apartments. I can hardly find myself in agreement with this opinion. It is certainly true that apartment residents are not miles away from each other but it is also evident that in China house owners are not thousands meters far away from their neighbors, either. What is more, a shorter distance does not necessarily mean a closer neighbourhood or more quality communication.
Overall, I firmly believe space and privacy count more when choosing a residence and a house serves this purpose more than a flat, in spite of the fact that the costs and expenses to live here are usually higher than the alternative choice.

First of all, the merits of an apartment lie in its low cost for both individuals and the society. It is generally accepted that an apartment is much less expensive than a house. Take Beijing for example, it costs you about 10,000 yuan/m ² to buy an apartment around the north 5th ring, but a neighboring house will claim more than three times that price. This is also true for the maintenance fees. As a result, living in an apartment would massively ease one"s financial burden and still allow for a quality life for ordinary white-collars even if they buy one on installment. Moreover, a high apartment building will definitely accommodate more population than even a terraced house, which is ideally economical for a crowded community or society concerning the finite land resources.
It is imaginable that some people would not like to choose an apartment because there are usually several different families sharing the same floor; they claim that they consequently have less privacy and are worried about their neighborhoods. This is true. But as far as I am concerned, the same fact gives justification to choosing a flat, for there are probably more opportunities for the dwellers to communicate with each other and enjoy the benefits of a harmonious community, which otherwise may be hampered by a fairly long distance.
In conclusion, I firmly believe that living in apartments makes a more reasonable choice for most people, with less financial burden but more proximate neighborhood than a house tends to bring. It is also well advised that governments should encourage real estate companies to develop more quality apartment buildings rather than costly properties like grand mansions and villas.
