Music Appreciation: Jazz
Professor: Let"s talk about American music today. I want to share with you information about the first really truly American genre in music—ragtime. You need to think back to what you know about history during the time period between 1899 and 1918—because that is the era of ragtime—the peak. You have to understand the word "syncopation" to really understand ragtime music. "Syncopation" means to accent notes on a weak beat or to shift accent. Now, when you usually think of music you think of metered time. In other words, you have 2/4 time or 3/4 time or 4/4 time—where a quarter note gets a certain count in a measure. In ragtime, the beat is a little different. In ragtime, there are accents which fall between the meter and it seems as if the melody is avoiding—or passing by—the metered beats. What is actually happening is that the accent in ragtime music appears to be anticipating the beat—or following the beat. Early music of this sort was originally called "ragged time" because "ragged" meant the changing of values of the notes and the rhythm of the piece to make it syncopated. But eventually the term evolved into "ragtime." Ragtime music was important in the development of jazz but they are not the same thing.
Ragtime began as dance music before it became popular as published sheet music. One person who contributed to the popularity of ragtime was Scott Joplin who published many rags throughout his life. Scott Joplin has been called the King of Ragtime. He was an artist and composer who was born in the late 1860s after the War Between the States. Very little is known about Scott"s early years—even the year of his birth is not known for certain. Scott"s father, who had been a slave, moved his family to a town on the Texas/Arkansas border when Scott was young. It was here that Scott got his start in music. Scott"s mother worked for a family that owned a piano. Scott was given access to it and he basically taught himself how to play the piano. A music teacher in his town became aware of Scott"s talents and began teaching him about classical music. Scott moved to the state of Missouri when he was in his twenties, and he launched his musical career. Scott performed in St. Louis, where ragtime was very popular, and he joined a minstrel group which toured and performed in different dries. At the time of the Chicago World"s Fair in 1893, Scott is known to have his own band playing a cornet with the band. He eventually returned to his home town of Texarkana on the border of the two states and played the comet in an all-black band. He also taught music to young musicians, began taking music courses at the local college, and played the piano at social clubs for blacks in his hometown. He began publishing music, including rags, and throughout his life he published numerous rags. The rags he published for the piano were high quality and although he did not gain a lot of recognition for his compositions during his lifetime, he gained the deserved recognition after his death.
Joplin also tried to publish an opera or two but was unsuccessful publishing or producing forms of music other than rag. Joplin was a musician because he played the cornet and the piano and could sing but his real musical talent lay in writing ragtime.
The popularity of ragtime waned after 1920 but by the 40s, there was a revival of this form of music which again reached a peak in the mid 1970s. There are four types of ragtime which have developed but the one which is heard most today is called "classical" ragtime. Classical ragtime as a form has a definite syncopation and is usually played in a march tempo rather than in a walz-tempo which was popular during the earlier years of ragtime. And—classical rag can be played on a piano or by a band.
[解析] 讲座一开始教授说道:I want to share with you information about the first really truly American genre in music—ragtime.
