Some people argue that universities and colleges should teach only “academic” subjects, while “non-academic”subjects (such as physical education, music and art) should be removed from the course calendar. Do you agree with the idea? Why or why not?

Should We Keep Non-academic Subjects in the Curriculum
In recent years, public attention to education issues is rising rapidly as more people are willing to receive better education. As a critical part in education, the layout of syllabus is being heatedly discussed. A part of teachers believe that it is essential to remove the non-academic subjects so that students can focus more on academic subjects, while the others insist that the non-academic subjects stands as an important role in students’ life. From my perspective, the non-academic subjects, as a facilitator of students’ comprehensive abilities and a regulator in the dull academic atmosphere, should be kept in syllabus.
For one thing, our education is not only dedicated to find the best way to foster people but also serves as a development platform for diversified aspects. The diversified selection of subjects offered at universities and vocational schools reflects the diversity of the society itself. Attempts to draw an artificial line between academic and non-academic courses would only limit students’ choices, but also stifle the rich diversity that is vital for society to thrive as a whole. If non-academic subjects are removed from school education, there will be less interactions between the future generation and the colorful extracurricular hobbies. Even worse, some students might have to sacrifice their weekends and holidays only to learn what they could have learned at school like volleyball, tennis, and flute. The loss outweighs the gain in the long run if these non-academic subjects are removed.
For another, there is no denying that students are under tremendous pressure to perform well in academics and in turn, suffer from a lack of relaxation. It might sound logical that students needs more time to learn academic subjects from the whole-hearted. However, we shouldn’t cut off the time of learning non-academic subjects to learn academic ones. Instead, non-academic courses have their distinctive charming. They provide students with a change in the pace of study and at the same time reduce the tedium and monotony of school life. Take music course as an example, students are able to get relaxed completely during a music course after a boring day. A moderate way is to provide non-academic subjects as optional courses in the curriculum. In this sense, students have the opportunity to pursue a broader range of interest provided they have sufficient time and energy.
In summary, while the academic subjects are the main factors that help students with their future career, nonacademic subjects also contribute to the development of their personal and social skills. Thus, schools should teach academic subjects as a main part of curriculum and at the same time teach non-academic subjects in order to provide a well-rounded education to the students.
