Opinion about What an MA Student Should Do
It is a prevailing trend that an increasing number of students choose to continue their study by attending graduate college. Different undergraduate students have different reasons to read for a MA degree. However, there are many students who just want to get a diploma of an MA degree. They spend most of their time and energy doing things irrelevant to their study. In my opinion, this phenomenon is a waste of education resources. I disagree with these students’ behavior. Here are my opinions about what an MA student should do.
To begin with, MA students need to establish a reasonable knowledge structure. You should learn as much professional knowledge as possible and try to understand all aspects of your research field. It is essential to master the methods and skills of independent research, which is different from BA students. Only if you master the basic knowledge and research methods can you stand out in the future interview. What’s more, you should choose one particular research field which you’re interested or good at to prepare for your thesis. You can browse relevant websites to see the topics of the recent academic conferences. Look through the relevant domestic journals and see what are researched these years. According to your own knowledge structure, you will naturally have a tendency to look at the topics you are interested in. After comparison, you may be able to form your thesis topic. Secondly, you are encouraged to get along well with your tutor. You should communicate with your tutor forwardly to report your phased outcome of study and listen to the instructor’s advice. Seriously complete what the teacher has given you that seems to have nothing to do with your paper. Because teachers often assign some work to you based on your intuitive understanding and what they think is appropriate for you. Maybe this is your advantage that you are not aware of. Last but not least, you should participate in some scientific practices related with their major. A three-month internship is also helpful to your future career.
To sum up, what MA students should do is to gain as much professional knowledge as possible and deal with their relationship with their tutor properly, as well as taking part in scientific practices.
