In 2013, Wang Jianlin, chairman of Wanda Group, challenged Jack Ma, founder and chairman of Alibaba Group, to a ¥100 million bet on whether e-commerce would surpass bricksand mortar retail in China in 10 years. As predicted by retail market analysts, this year's Singles Day would see a year-on-year sales increase of 40 percent.
Please discuss the impact of online shopping on the traditional Chinese culture and on our daily lives, and develop your opinion into a short essay of about 400-500 words with a proper title.
Online Shopping in China
These years, ecommerce has been developing very fast in China. There are more and more ecommerce platforms such as Taobao, JD.COM and so on, as well as mobile payment tools like Alipay and Wechat pay, which are fairly advanced even in the world. Those have changed the shopping method of Chinese people dramatically and make our lives much more convenient.
Online shopping has converted our way of shopping. In the past, we used to go shopping at only brick and mortar shops and make deals with the shopkeeper face to face. However, now we can shop anywhere we want only by a mobile phone and get products that are much cheaper than those in stores. Besides, online shopping has also changed our way of payment. In the past, we only pay by cash or credit cards. But now we Chinese pay by mobile payment tools, Alipay or Wechatpay, which is prevalent even in developed countries. What's more, online shopping has also changed our consumption concept. In the past, we Chinese people used to save money for unexpected needs or make ends meet at least. Now many of us consume in advance and make mortgage payment because of the thriving of payment tools and their services. Online shopping has promoted the fast growing of delivery business. In the past, there was only post office in China to help to deliver goods and letters. However, now there are all kinds of private express companies, such as sf-express, STO and ZTO Express and so on. We buy something online, and the goods can be delivered to you in one or two days, which has brought much convenience to our daily lives. Surprisingly, since 2010, online retailers have transformed the holiday, also known as “Double 11”, into an epic online shopping extravaganza akin to America's Cyber Monday.
However, everything has two sides. Shopping on the Internet also has some shortcomings. Firstly, those who shop on the Internet can't try the goods before they buy. Sometimes, the real goods are not the same as the goods they are seen on the Internet. Secondly, some shops on the Internet are dishonest and they would not deliver the goods after paying. And if this situation happens, the consumers would find nowhere to complain and never pull out the money any longer.
In my opinion, shopping on the Internet is an irreversible trend. More and more people will be accustomed to it. It will be much more popular in the near future. And at the same time, we should take some measures to make it better.
