I want us to take this chance to build on all the ties between Britain and China—in business, diplomacy, education, tourism and culture—as we forge a new role for Britain as the most outward-looking, free-trading nation in the world.
Singapore has a reputation for being highly Westernized, with English among the country's four official languages. But the language sometimes is quite different from the English we are familiar with.
This language that resembles English is called Singaporean English. It is a "patchwork" because Singapore consists of migrants from a variety of countries, and they all speak their own versions of "English".
Interesting and diverse as it may seem, the trend for Singaporean English is worrying Singapore's government. It is concerned that the dialect is lowering the country's English standard and may affect its relationship with foreigners.
However, Singaporean English has thrived, especially among young people who think of it as a sign of being cool and a way to identify themselves as Singaporean.
