M: I admit that the closing of local lines will cause some inconvenience to a few people but it can't be helped. We can't expect taxpayers to go on subsidizing these enormous losses forever.
W: But don't you see, the rail service is an essential public amenity, the same as schools and hospitals. It shouldn't be expected to make a profit. Safe transportation of the people is the responsibility of the government.
M: As far as inter-city services are concerned, I agree with you entirely, Mrs. Randolph. But, local transportation has to be provided by local authorities.
