【正确答案】Sample Essay-Heavy Fines
When a company harms the environment through the goods or services it sells, it must be punished. I believe the perfect way to punish these firms is to impose heavy penalties upon them.
The first reason is that it is fair for any company that harms the environment to pay for the damage it caused. This penalty should be extremely high so that it causes great harm to the business. The fine should therefore be for millions or tens of millions of dollars. This will most likely cause the company to lose money and not to make a profit. I remember reading about an incident in which a company was caught dumping toxic waste into a river, which caused a great deal of water pollution. The company was caught and fined millions of dollars. As a result, it later declared bankruptcy and went out of business, which was news I was pleased to read.
When the government fines a company for the harm it causes the environment, it can then use the fine money it receives to pay for the cleanup. There are a couple of advantages to doing this. First, it provides instant money to pay for the affected area to be cleansed. Second, it protects the country's taxpayers from having to pay for the problems caused by the company. A couple of times, businesses in my country contaminated the environment but were not punished. In addition, the government had to pay for the cleanup, which cost billions of dollars. My parents were very displeased that their tax money was being used to pay for problems caused by other people.
A final point is that if companies are fined for their misdeeds, then other businesses will be less likely to engage in similar behavior. So heavy fines can serve as deterrents for bad behavior. Imagine that a company gets fined $100 million for polluting the environment. Other companies in the same industry will be more careful not to create pollution of their own since they will not want to be fined the same amount of money.
Fines can hurt businesses financially, provide money for cleaning up the environment, and serve as deterrents to other companies. For those reasons, I consider fines to be the best form of punishment for companies that harm the environment.
   Sample Essay-Other Ways
While fines can be a useful means of punishment, there are other ways to deal with companies that harm the environment. The methods I support would be much better at punishing the firms causing damage while simultaneously ensuring that the environment is returned to its previous condition.
The first method of punishment I support is for any company that damages the environment to be forced to pay for the cleanup no matter what the cost. I do not care if the company goes bankrupt and if the employees, particularly the CEO and other executives, are forced to pay money from their own personal funds. Companies that harm the environment frequently get fined small amounts of money, which is wrong. If they are made to pay for everything to be cleaned up, however, they may be obligated to spend huge amounts of money, which will hurt them financially and prevent taxpayers from having to spend their own money.
Next, if a company produces a product which harms the environment, it should be banned from producing that product anytime in the future. When a company shows that it cannot make something safely and without causing damage, then it is obviously irresponsible and inept. It is logical that the government stop it from making that particular product. Making my idea a law will keep companies from hurting the environment since they will want to make products that they can profit from.
Finally, when a company damages the environment, its executives should be arrested, put on trial, and, if found guilty, imprisoned. Companies regularly harm the environment, but the people responsible—the CEOs and other executives—almost never get punished. In many instances, they actually get bonuses or are allowed to retire with big pensions. This is a problem around the world. A company in my country poisoned the environment, but nothing happened to the CEO even though he knew the company's factories were releasing harmful pollutants into the atmosphere. He should have been thrown in prison for a long time.
It is obvious that there are better ways of punishing those who cause damage to the environment than fines. Some methods are making those who damage the environment pay for its cleanup, banning companies from producing certain products, and jailing those individuals leading companies that harm the environment.
