New York is the headquarters of the United Nations. Many countries worked together to build these buildings of marble, glass, and steel along the East River. People from all over the world live in New York and work at the United Nations. There are ambassadors and economic experts, interpreters and guides. The ambassadors meet in the General Assembly and in special councils. The interpreters must speak at least one of the six official languages of the United Nations; English, French, Spanish, Russian , Arabic, and Chinese. They listen to speeches in one language and interpret them quickly into another. They must work quickly, but they must also work carefully. The ambassadors discuss serious world problems, but the people of the United Nations do more than just talk. They also help the nations of the world through such groups as WHO, the World Health Organization, and UNICEF, the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund.
