Should Driving Be Restricted in Big Cities?
With the rapid development of economy, people‟s living conditions have been greatly improved. As a result, more and more people can afford cars and would rather drive a car than take a bus as a private car is convenient and rather quick. However, with the number of private cars surging rapidly, it brings about a lot of problems like air pollution, noise, and traffic congestion. Therefore, some hold that we should make driving restrictions in big cities in order to relieve traffic stress. I can‟t agree with this idea more.
There are some factors that can support my opinion. To begin with, the sharp increase of private cars worsens the already contaminated atmosphere in China. A lot of big cities in China are now plagued by serious air pollution. It is evident that cars contribute a lot to poor environmental condition. The toxic fumes made by cars can pollute the air and exhaust is hazardous to human health. Instead, we can reduce emissions and lower the cost of transport by sharing one bus. In addition, private cars consume a great deal of energy. It seems wasteful in our limited natural resources.
What‟s more, too many cars will give rise to a series of problems. For example, traffic jams are very commonly seen in urban areas, and have become a big headache for citizens. In rush hours, endless cars get stuck on the road and the whole city is like a huge parking lot. Besides, more and more traffic accidents occur every day due to poor driving skills of inexperienced private car owners or carelessness of those drivers. It is also hard to find a suitable place to park so many cars within limited space. All of these are seriously affecting our life.
As what has been mentioned above, I think driving should be restricted in big cities. It‟s high time for our government to take effective action to limit the number of cars. For example, they can build more subway lines, highways and strengthen city infrastructures of the main roads. As far as the great demand for means of transport is concerned, we can develop mass transportation system to take place of private cars, and the public are encouraged to use public transportation vehicles. In conclusion, all of us should dedicate ourselves to building a green and clean, harmonious and environmental-friendly society.
