Evaluation of academic performance has taken various forms according to different education systems.Nevertheless, for a fair judgment about students' performance in an academic semester, there is a school of thought holding that student's final grades should be determined by numerous small assignments instead of a few large ones.From my perspective, it‟s absolutely a feasible way to achieve an ideal outcome.
Initially, frequent assignments enable students to learn more throughout an academic semester, given the fact that each piece of assignment includes one or more chapter from the textbook and students have to read all contents to finish it. As an illustration, when the final exam is drawing near, usually students will review contents with line to get prepared but forget all after the exam, which has an adverse influence on their study.
Furthermore, if students' final grades are decided by only a few large exams, the evaluation would certainly be unfair and unwise to a certain degree. Some fortunate students can randomly guess the right options in difficult choice questions where diligent students may fail. Consequently students' final grades can't reflect their abilities accordingly.Meanwhile the result will frustrate the hardworking students who have been industrial for an entire semester but only failed in one exam. Therefore, a few large assignments can't determine students' final grades.
The third reason lies in the fact that plentiful assignments enable teachers to have a clearer sense of students' learning situation. After conducting constant practice, students can get feedback from teachers. If there are any problems,teachers can help students to resolve them in time, thus students can test their knowledge constantly.
Admittedly, a few large assignments won't pose strain on students, as they won't spend much time on preparing for the class. However, without preview and review, such learning method is in effect detrimental to their study.
All in all, small assignments outweigh a few large assignments in many aspects. It not only helps students learn more, but also enables them to grasp knowledge solidly.
