It sounds great. Something is desperately needed and someone who has it agrees to give it for no charge except that "that something" involves genetically engineered crops which in some parts of the world still raise environmental concerns and "that someone" is the company Monsanto, the biotech giant which in the past was accused of developing genetically engineered crops that were too expensive for most African farmers.
"Here you are with the problem. You"re looking for the solution. Mosanto is willing to give it to all, so it"s the best partner we have because they are helping us to solve our problem."
Everyone is keen to stress that genetically engineered or transgenic crops are just one of the options. The project is also working on conventional plant breeding and a sort of halfway house between conventional breeding and genetic engineering called marker-assisted selection.
