Translation means intercultural communication by means of which one culture can be transmitted into another, so the cultural special characteristics unavoidably influence translation. Translation, whether as an activity, a process or a product, carries certain cultural meaning. Possibility, forms and contents of translation depend on various factors of the target culture. Translation results not only enrich the national culture, but also reflect cultural changes and development in a way. In fact, there exists obvious interaction between translation and culture. An understanding of the relationship between translation and culture is essential for the culturological and cross cultural approach to translation.
The development of ―cultural turn‖ and textual linguistics in the western countries helps us obtain access to a deeper understanding of the essence of translation activity characterized by its intercultural and interdisciplinary features.That is, translation is not only the process of transforming the source-language into the target-language but also the process of a mutual communication and an exchange of the two different cultures, thereby functioning as a medium of the culture spread and an intercultural action as well. From the angle of culture and philosophy, this paper attempts to analyze the relationship between translation and culture, to come up with and define and discuss such conceptions as “translation in culture”, “culture in translation”, “cultural translation” and “translation culture”. The author holds that translation is inevitably under the double restrictions of the culture of both the source-language and the target- language. Therefore, only when the text is processed in the context of culture in a broad sense can the essence of the translation be identified and the crux of translation tackled.
In a word, translation and culture are inseperable. Firstly, culture necessarily exerts a great influence on translation.The ways of thinking, beliefs, attitudes and values of different nations gice rise to failaure or misunderstanding in cross-cultural communication. Secondly, translation also influences culture. It can enrich a nation’s culture by absorbing foreign cultural nourishmnets and transplantng the outside cultures into its own cultural environmnets. Finally, translation serves as cultural intermediation.
It is better for us to conclude that translation is more closely related to culural factors. Without the cultural knowledge, it is difficult to translate the original text into target language accurately. Only by systematic and concrete contrast between two cultures, can it be possible to recognize cultural characteristics and achieve relative translation equivalance. Therefore, we must learn cultures when we are doing translations. Both the languages and the cultural information hidden in the words should be conveyed.
