No one
can escape the aging process. It is said, "There is a time to be born and a time
to die." However, what one does during a lifetime to make use of the time on
hand is what counts. Age, country of origin, culture, or upbringing do not
hinder one who really wants to achieve great things. What is needed is the
willpower to do what inner feelings tell us we are capable of doing.
People are known to live to be over 100 years old in countries around the
world. These people lived vigorous lives by working hard for a living, and
maintaining a healthy life-style of diet, exercises, and mental readiness. Some
of these people accomplished a great deal in their lifetimes for their country,
religion, family, and for their personal satisfaction. The lives of these great
people remind us that we are able to do much in our youth and adult lives, and
also in our old age. There is always something new to be accomplished. The
question remains, are we ready mentally to accomplish such tasks for the sake of
our country and for humanity at large? Additionally, are we ready, at any time,
to do this?
【正确答案】In my opinion, the sake of most ordinary people who accomplish great tasks in their lives does not originate from what the statement maintains. In their minds, interest, wealth, reputation etc. seem to be more important than the interest of the country and of the whole of humanity. However, some great celebrities such as Washington, the former president of the United States, and some others achieved much for and made great contributions to their country and to humanity. But whether they were ready, at any time, to do this is open to discussion. For instance, the reputation of President Nixon who was admired by most Americans before the Watergate Incident was ultimately tarnished when the interest of the individual and the country was contradicted.

Student A Dennis! How goes it? I haven't seen you around lately.
Student B Yeah, I've kind of been laying low.
Student A Is everything ok?
Student B Not really. Ever since Nicole broke up with me. I've been a bit of a weak. My life feels so disorganized.
Student A I'm sorry to hear that. Are things getting any better?
Student B No. They just seem to be going from bad to worse. And to top it all off, we have our big exams this month.
Student A Tell me about it. I'm so worried about them that I can hardly sleep at night.
Student B I wish I could say the same. I feel like sleeping all the time. I can't concentrate on my studies at all.
Student A It sounds like you're pretty stressed, my friend.
Student B Probably. I have a lot on my plate right now, but what can I do about it?
Student A I'm taking a psychology class, and my professor said the key to coping with stress is knowing when you're experiencing it. Then, you can take steps to calm yourself down.
Student B That's easier said than done. How can I calm myself down when I feel so worried all the time?
Student A One way to control stress is to find a quiet, comfortable place to relax. Then, for two minutes, clear your mind of thoughts and breathe deeply.
Student B I suppose I could try that. But I doubt it will work. I can't do anything right these days.
Student A You probably aren't as helpless as you think. Isn't there anything in your life you can change?
Student B I'm taking a math class that I don't really need. Maybe I should give it up.
Student A That's the idea. Keep things as simple as possible. No one can do everything, you know.
Student B That's true. Also, instead of worrying about all the things I have to do, I should just focus on one thing at a time.
