During Double Ninth Festival, a large number of organizations take actions to show their concern for the elderly. Many groups of volunteers visit the home of the aged and help them wash their feet to show their respect. Actions like this have aroused different reactions among the public as to the best way to pay respect to the elderly. However, as far as I am concerned, the best way to pay respect to the elderly is to care for them constantly rather than only on Double Ninth Festival.

First of all, caring for the elderly is something practical and significant. With the accelerating pace of social development, many young people focus on their personal career to the point of neglecting the elderly. As a result, Double Ninth Festival is the only occasion that reminds or pushes them to show concern for the elderly by sending gifts. Nevertheless, only by taking care of the elderly in everyday life can the virtue of showing filial piety be passed down through generations. Besides, showing concern for the elderly on a single day but leaving them alone for the rest of the year can do nearly nothing but making them lonelier and more isolated. Although indeed, concern from others is to elderly what sugar is to black coffee, turning bitterness to sweetness, after her feet being washed seven times, for instance, the old lady might be left untended and disappointed.

So far as I am concerned, what the elderly really need is care and company. People’ s care, no matter from families or strangers, can give the elderly warmth, which they are really eager for. Teenagers can go to homes of the aged in local community frequently instead of only on the Double Ninth Day or other special festivals. Young people can prepare food or special entertainments for the elderly. Or, we can just stay and talk with them, which can give them happiness enough. All in all, our best way to pay respect to the elderly is to care for them. Treat them like your own parents and both of you can enjoy it.

To sum up, we can safely reach the conclusion that we’ d better pay respect to the elderly regularly. Caring for them on a special festival but leaving them alone most of the time will do no significant good, or even lead to increasing problems.
