Directions: In this part, you are required to write a story describing communication differences that you have noticed you and different people from other cultures. Your composition should be no less than 150 words. Write your composition on the answer sheet.
Different cultures have different expressions. The culture of China differs from that of U.S by a rather large scale of elements. Not surprisingly, how people communicate in daily life is also not the same, sometimes even the opposite.
Americans have many forms of greeting someone, including “good morning” and “Hello”. Traditional greetings in China can be quite different from American ones. A typical Chinese greeting translated into English is “Have you eaten yet”. Americans would probably take it literally—their answer would probably be “Yes” or “No”, while in fact it is interpreted as an invitation to a restaurant or to one's home for a meal. In general, Americans would feel uncomfortable if someone approaches them in such a way.
As we can see, there exists a huge gap between Chinese culture and another one. One important thing is to get some basic knowledge about other cultures so as not to misunderstand conversations with foreigners.
