M: Hi, Mary. How are you feeling? Just come back from hospital?
W: Very well, thank you. Nothing serious.
M: You know the day for our decision comes nearer.
W: So, are you considering Modern Art?
M: Yeah. I just love colors and shapes. I want to get into architecture too—design buildings which are huge works of art in the middle of busy cities. What about you? Chemistry?
W: Material science, to be exact. I want to study the chemistry of polymers.
M: That sounds boring.
W: Not at all! Did you know that the fleece sweater you wear could have been made from recycled plastic Coke bottles?
M: You mean this sweater I paid an arm and a leg for is made from plastic bottles?
W: That’s chemistry! And look at this chair we’re sitting on, it’s unbreakable. Melt it and you get a cup, re-shape it and you get a stair case. Polymers—plastic—you can make it into any shape and color you want!
M: How strong can plastic be? Can I build with it?
W: Sure! That’s the beauty of plastics—you can make it, color it and shape it to suit your need.
M: Well, material science is definitely for you—you sound so excited about plastics! When I’m a famous architect and you a famous polymer-scientist, I’ll look you up to help me make a beautiful big plastic building that’s a piece of art in the middle of Manhattan!
W: That’s a deal!
