Apparently they stand for two classes of people in different social positions: the rich and the poor. The rich father envies the poor one whose son gets a full score in examination, while the poor father envies the rich one for his luxurious car. The rich people who enjoy good living condition are worrying about their children's low grades at school. While the poor may feel sorry for their inability to afford their children good studying conditions.
In my opinion, it is natural for people to have such mental states. The rich father wishes his son to be a successful student, so as to pursue a decent career in the future. As for the poor father, he desires good living conditions for his child, so as to perform still better. Actually, they both show the same love for their children in different ways.
