There were two high mountains, and on the very top of ,each mountain stood a castle. A dog was running in the valley below. It sniffed along the ground to look for some food. Suddenly, from one castle the trumpet sounded announcing that dinner was ready. At once the dog started running up the mountain to get a little food. But just as it had come halfway, the trumpeter stopped, and a trumpet from the other castle began to blow. Then the dog thought, "They will have finished eating here before I came, but over there they will have just begun." So it went down and ran up the other mountain. But now the trumpet at the first castle started blowing again, whereas the other had stopped. Once more the dog ran down one mountain and up the other. He kept doing this until both trumpeters stopped at last and dinner was over. The dog got no food at all.
