What Makes an Adult?

In every culture there are Characteristics that mark the transition of a person from childhood into adulthood. These may take place in a moment or over the course of time. They may be recognizable by all or perceived only by the individual. Among them, a generally recognized characteristic is age. Many people directly attribute age to adulthood. But is it true?
There is no doubt that age has relationship with adulthood. However, it is too subjective to recognize an 18-year-old teenager as an adult, for adulthood is not merely based on age but is based strictly on emotional maturity.
So what constitutes emotional maturity, and thus adulthood?
There are many elements that constitute adulthood. Among them, I should put first a sense of comprehensiveness: the ability to take account of all the important factors and attach to each its due weight. This has become more complex than it used to be owing to the complicated situations confronted by various persons. Though over 18, some individuals ignore the importance of comprehensiveness. They tackle some problems without thinking about the consequences. Such persons lack the element to be an adult.
Comprehensiveness alone, however, is not enough to construct an adult. There are several other factors that constitute an adult and his maturity. Please bear in mind: maturity is an ongoing process, not a state, so try your best to continuously strive for self improvement. For an adult, the ability to envy others is an essential characteristic to improve him. In the growth, try to envy others and learn from them. In the process of spotting others" merits while learning from them, you will run into the ecstasy of growing mature.
Envy, as an element in one"s growth, promotes a person"s maturity. Besides, a responsible attitude towards life and work retains its indispensability in one"s growth. An adult, by law, is the one who can undertake liability. A person without the ability to take on responsibility is not a true adult.
I think the last element that contributes to adulthood is confidence. Whenever you are, you should be confident in yourself. You are the unique one and you are surely needed somewhere in the world. At the same time, do not be arrogant. Arrogance is usually the symbol of immaturity, for an adult knows himself very well, both strength and weakness. Arrogant person will finally inflict problems upon himself. So, being mature entails confidence but not arrogance.
Life is like a box of chocolate, just as Forest Gump has mentioned. Life is also a journey along which life must be fulfilled. A true adult knows what is awaiting him alongside his journey and knows how to fulfill it. The person with comprehensiveness, envy, responsibility and confidence knows it!
