The first stage of catabolism that occurs inside the cell is known as glycolysis. Glycolysis is a series of chemical reactions in the cytosol of the cell that provide mitochondria with the substrate molecules needs to generate ATP. A series of enzyme-catalyzed reactions partially oxidizes the glucose into pyruvate, which is then transported into mitochondrial for further processing.
