问答题Do you remember how Forrest Gump was preparing for the biggest ping pong match of his life to be played in China? Well, he came, he played, and he kicked butt. I am pretty sure “Lose Face” were the words of the day.【】The Forrest Gump pipedream visits me every now and then. I have always fantasized about standing atop the gold-medal podium for the Red, White and Blue; victory paddle in one hand, 24-ka. rats around my neck, Chinese opponents on both sides, with Old Glory rising and the Star-Spangled Banner playing. Ok, wake me up. Who am I kidding? The Chinese will lose their number one spot on the ping pong podium when Hainan Island freezes over. And that’ s why I started playing the glorious game of ma jiang.【】If you can’ t beat ‘ em at pong, ma jiang must be the second best thing, right? Now, 1 am not talking about mahjong, the matching tile game you play on the computer to kill time; I am talking about bona fide, cutthroat Chinese ma jiang.【】I feel the most “Chinese” when I am sitting at the ma jiang table raking in the dough. And most of the time, in terms of making money, Chairman Mao’ s face is my friend, but hot streaks easily give way to cold ones. Indeed, most of ma jiang is a game of luck; I would say 70% luck and 30% skill.【】Unlike poker, in ma jiang, reading your opponents tends to be almost impossible, so tense stare downs are rarely seen.【】Perhaps, I am the . only Westerner in this city who plays ma jiang competitively. I guess you could call me the Da Shan of ma jiang, and that’ s part of the thrill for me. The other part of it is being just as skilled as my Chinese opponents, who started playing ma jiang when I was just a little kid, swinging the Little League bat back stateside.【】Truly, when I started playing ma jiang, I didn’ t know what I was going to get; I didn’ t realize back then, that today, I would love it so much. I am a competitive person, so I guess ma jiang and me turned out to be-well-you know, like those two compatible veggies. In the end, if ma jiang one day becomes an Olympic event, you know what’ s going down.

问答题If you think life is wonderful and expect it to stay that way, then you may have a good chance of living to a ripe old age, at least that is what the findings of a new study suggest. That study found that participants who reported the highest levels of optimism were far more likely to live to age 85 or【C1】________. This was compared to those participants who reported the lowest levels of optimism. It is【C2】________that the findings held even after the researchers considered factors that could【C3】________the link, including whether participants had health conditions such as heart disease or cancer, or whether they experienced depression. The results add to a growing body of evidence that certain psychological factors may predict a longer life【C4】________. For example, previous studies have found that more optimistic people have a lower risk of developing chronic diseases, and a lower risk of【C5】________death. However, the new study appears to be the first to【C6】________look at the relationship between optimism and longevity. The researchers【C7】________that the link found in the new study was not as strong when they factored in the effects of certain health behaviors, including exercise levels, sleep habits and diet. This suggests that these behaviors may, at least in part, explain the link. In other words, optimism may【C8】________good habits that bolster health. It is also important to note that the study found only a【C9】________. as researchers did not prove for certain that optimism leads to a longer life. However, if the findings are true, they suggest that optimism could serve as a psychological【C10】________that promotes health and a longer life. A) affect F) henceforth K) reconciled B)beyond G) lofty L)span C)conceded H) noteworthy M) specifically D) correlation I) plausibly N) spiral E) foster J) premature O) trait

问答题Virtue and intelligence belong to human beings as individuals freely associating with other individuals in small groups. So do sin and stupidity. But the subhuman mindlessness to which the demagogue makes his appeal, the moral imbecility on which he relies when he goads his victims into action, are characteristic not of men and women as individuals, but of men and women in masses. Mindlessness and moral idiocy are not characteristically human attributes; they are symptoms of herd-poisoning. In all the world's higher religions, salvation and enlightenment are for individuals. The kingdom of heaven is within the mind of a person, not within the collective mindlessness of a crow.

问答题The level of economic and industrial development enjoyed by a state affects the foreign policy goals it can pursue. (46) As a general proposition, the more developed a state is economically, the more likely it is that it will play an activist role in the world political economy. Rich nations have interests that extend far beyond their borders and typically command the means necessary to pursue and protect them. (47) Not coincidentally, countries that enjoy industrial capabilities and extensive involvement in international trade also tend to be militarily powerful, in part because military might is a function of economic capabilities. For two decades after world war two, the United States and the Soviet Union stood out as superpowers precisely because they benefited from that combination of economic and military capability including extensive arsenals of nuclear weapons and the means to deliver them anywhere, that enabled both to practice unrestrained globalism. Their imperial reach and interventionist behaviors were seemingly unrestrained by limited wealth or resources. In fact, major powers have been involved in foreign conflict more frequently than minor powers. Although economically advanced nations are more active globally, this does not mean that their privileged circumstances dictate adventuresome policies. Rich nations are usually "satisfied" ones that have much to lose from the onset of revolutionary change or global instability. (48) For this reason, they usually perceive preservation of the status quo as serving their interests best, and they often practice international economic policies designed to protect and expand their envied position at the pinnacle of the global hierarchy. Levels of productivity and prosperity also affect the foreign policies of the poor states at the bottom of the hierarchy. (49) Some respond to their economic weakness by complying subserviently with the wishes of the rich on which they depend. Others rebel defiantly, and they sometimes succeed in resisting major power efforts to control their international behavior. Hence efforts to generalize about the economic foundations of states' international political behavior often prove unrewarding. Levels of economic development vary widely among states in the international system, but they do not by themselves determine foreign policies. (50) Instead the opportunities and constraints that leaders perceive in their nation's attributes, rather than the actual level of development, may be the determining source of states' international conduct.
